Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Angus Campbell
The Australian Defence Force
has a long and honourable history
of service to our nation. However,
at times, we have fallen short
in our performance. To address
this, a number of Good Soldiering
initiatives were developed.
Good Soldiering seeks to build
an inclusive organisation that
develops and employs all our people
to be the best Army we can be.
We have a zero tolerance
attitude to discrimination and
This is our Army.
What is Good
Good Soldiering is Army's
cultural renewal program.
It's a program that includes all
the things we already strive for
in our Army---mateship, morale
and cooperation. It's about living
our values of courage, initiative,
respect and teamwork, and being
part of a supportive community. It's
about having appropriate cultural
behaviour and being responsible
for ourselves, but it's also about
respecting each other's differences
and work requirements.
Good Soldiering includes all of
Army's cultural renewal initiatives,
current and future, focusing on
the areas of leadership, reform,
diversity, talent management,
policy and program enablers and
Through these efforts, the Army
will continue to have the best
trained, equipped and prepared
soldiers for the future. The Good
Soldiering program is an ongoing
effort that will continue to evolve
over time to suit the changing
needs of our Army and its people.
Australian Army soldiers are
culturally attuned and disciplined.
They conduct themselves with
the highest degree of personal
integrity and responsibility at all
times. They set the standard for
their peers at all ranks and lead by
example every day.
They know right from wrong,
and they are not bystanders when
wrong is being done. They know
when to use force and when to
exercise restraint. They are mentally
and physically tough. They are
experts in their duties.
They are the backbone of a
modern and capable force. They
protect and defend our nation.
Courage, both moral and
physical, to act in the best interests
of Australia and the Army; including
the moral strength and professional
ethics to balance the will to win with
compassion; and mateship with duty.
Initiative to explore
opportunities and embrace
innovation to improve Army and our
service to Australia by honouring
its past, and taking ownership of
its present and future. Initiative is
the ability to achieve the mission
by exploiting opportunity and
improvising to make the most of the
equipment and resources available.
Respect for ourselves, our
colleagues, our community and
our history of service to Australia;
acknowledging that each one of us
has earned both the right to wear
the Rising Sun badge, and the
responsibility to uphold the values
and traditions it embodies and
symbolises. Respect is an essential
element of military professionalism
Teamwork to support each
other, our Navy and Air Force, other
parts of Government, our allies and
our regional security partners for
any mission; consciously aware
that in an increasingly connected
world, that such national and
international 'communities' face
shared challenges. Teamwork is
essential to mission success. It is
the product of leadership, individual
commitment, trust and training.
Good Soldiering seeks to build an
inclusive organisation that develops
and employs all our people to be the
best Army we can be.
The Australian Army's cultural renewal initiatives have been
brought together under a single banner -- 'Good Soldiering'.
