NSW reservists get back to basics with major foundation warfighting exercise
RESERVISTS from the NSW-based
8 Bde and 5 Bde joined forces to
build foundation warfighting skills on
Exercise Polygon Wood.
About 500 troops from the two
reserve brigades were organised into two
combat teams in a battlegroup, with HQ
provided by 2/17RNSWR, for two train-
ing blocks of four days each.
CO 2/17RNSWR Lt-Col Steve
Brumby said the exercise was the first hit
out for the reserve battlegroup.
“Exercise Polygon Wood was
designed to focus on the first steps
required toward building the capability,”
The culmination of the 8 Bde com-
bat team’s initial training activity was

Meanwhile, the 5 Bde combat team
focused on weapons qualifications and
currency training, firing all platoon
weapons ranging from small arms to
At the end of the first four days, the
combat teams swapped roles.
Commander 8 Bde Brig Allan
Murray said a range of support forces
were on hand during the exercise.
“The two combat teams were ably
supported by Bushmasters, combat engi-
neers, and a battery of 81mm mortars,
provided through the combined efforts
of the recently formed 7 and 23 Light
Batteries, which also conducted live fire
during the exercise,” he said.
The brigades also took the opportuni-
ty to support Exercise Executive Stretch,
which gives the employers of reservists a
taste of military training.
“This provided employers the oppor-
tunity to see first-hand some of their
reserve employees in action and get an
appreciation of their training and capa-
bility,” Lt-Col Brumby said.
“The NSW brigades will continue
to combine on further exercises into the
future to ensure the reserve battlegroup
is as capable as it can possibly be.”
