AN AVENUE of Honour is
under construction on the
Tinaburra Peninsula in North
Two rows of more than 60
flame trees stretching through
parkland to the tranquil waters
of Lake Tinaroo will be a living
memorial to Australian soldiers
killed in Afghanistan.
The national monument will
encompass a sculptured memo-
rial designed by award-winning
steel artisans and representing
"undaunted spirit and true val-
our", according to Gordon Chuck,
the father of Pte Ben Chuck who
was serving with the SOTG when
he was killed in a helicopter crash
on June 21, 2010.
"Adjacent will be a memorial
to the explosives detection dogs
and an honour board displaying
the names of all those courageous
and committed Australians who
have sacrificed their lives in the
defence of freedom and basic
human rights -- a privilege we
can so easily take for granted,"
"The Honour Board will be
shaded by a spectacular fabric
structure depicting 'wings in
flight' and soft floodlighting will
illuminate their presence forever.
"The avenue will offer an
environment for those seeking a
place to reflect on the deeds of
these remarkable Australians and
to honour the price they have paid
for the values we as a nation hold
dearly, and have been steadfastly
defending for generations."
It will sit in gardens designed
by one of Australia's leading pro-
ject landscape architects.
Although it started as a small
local initiative, the Avenue of
Honour concept has grown into
a major national project with
support from the Department of
Veterans Affairs, Queensland
State Government, state and
regional branches of the RSL,
Tablelands Regional Council,
ADF personnel, community
groups and private and corporate
"The support and generosity
of so many from places far and
wide across the country has been
nothing short of remarkable and a
humbling experience," Mr Chuck
"This is a clear demonstration
of the nation's recognition and
respect for our armed forces and
the role they continue to play in
defence of our individual and col-
lective rights and freedoms.
"The Avenue of Honour will be
a living memorial to all the brave
men and women who have fought,
continue to suffer and those who
have died in the Afghanistan War
and will stand testament to their
courage, commitment and sacri-
fice for generations to come. We
shall never forget them."
The Avenue of Honour will be
officially opened on June 22.
