FORMER Army drill instructor Grace
Watson recently celebrated her 100th
birthday with a special visit by DCA
Maj-Gen Angus Campbell.
Celebrating the day with friends and
family, Mrs Watson said she had never
thought anything like this would have
happened to her.
Maj-Gen Campbell thanked her for
her service as an instructor at the Royal
Military College during WWII, not-
ing she had taught current CA Lt-Gen
David Morrison's father (later Maj-Gen
Morrison) how to march.
"It was wonderful to acknowledge a
life well lived and to recognise service
to the nation and the contribution by her
and others in a time of national emer-
gency," he said.

THE Australian War Animal Memorial
Organisation has recognised the deeds of ani-
mals during Australian military service. It has
established four bronze War Animal Memorial
plaques in Queensland featuring the six main
animals Australia has used in combat -- a
horse, camel, donkey, mule, pigeon and dog.
The pictures are designed so visually impaired
people can identify the animals and children
can trace over them for school projects. To
view the plaques go to www.facebook.com/
organisation hopes that the more Facebook
friends and likes it gets will help to have the sig-
nificant efforts of animals formally recognised.
Funds for Legacy
DONNA Reggett saw a photo of her friend's
son in his dad's cams last year, after his father
was injured in an IED explosion, and decided
to raise funds for Legacy. She started Heroes'
Mates, a calendar Ms Reggett compiles from
the photos of children of Defence families. The
photos all show the children's military connec-
tion. Ms Reggett is now accepting photos for her
next calendar to be completed before Legacy
Week in September. Calendars are still for sale
for $12.50 including postage. For more details
