THE 3RAR Task Group handed
over the role of advising the
Afghan National Army's 4th Bde
to the 7RAR Task Group during a
transfer of authority ceremony on
The lowering of the 3RAR flag
and the raising of the 7RAR flag
at Multinational Base Tarin Kot
represented the formal change of
command authority for Australia's
primary force contribution to
CO 3RAR Task Group Lt-Col
Trent Scott said the men and women
under his command achieved vast
operational successes during their
deployment from June to November.
"Not only did we continue the
sterling work done by our predeces-
sors in enhancing the operational via-
bility of the 4th Bde but we prepared
them for independent operations at
the kandak level, we retrograded
from our patrol and forward operat-
ing bases and set up 7RAR for suc-
cess in operational support," he said.
"The 3RAR Task Group displayed
remarkable patience, perseverance,
maturity and professionalism in the
way they went about their business
and I am extremely proud of each
and every one of them."
Through the Afghan summer and
autumn, the task group conducted
major operations clearing the Tangi
Valley, Chora Valley, Khaz Uruzgan
and Shah Wali Kot to disrupt the insur-
gency and secure the local population.
Successful mentoring also ensured
the kandaks enhanced their skills in
counter-IED operations, marksman-
ship, literacy, navigation, mainte-
nance, combat medical aid, combat
service support and offensive support.
The 7RAR Task Group will focus
on advising the leadership of the
ANA 4th Bde, rather than mentoring
and training at the kandak level.
The shift in posture has been
made possible by the success of the
transition process and the growing
independence and capability of the
CO 7RAR Task Group Lt-Col
Malcolm Wells said the 3RAR Task
Group had done a "magnificent job".
"They have left an indelible mark
here on the province, the 4th Bde and
the local people and left very big shoes
for us to fill," he said.
"The challenge for us is to continue
the progress that 4th Bde have made,
continuing to move them to the front
through transition so that by the end
of our tour we are very close to 4th
Bde being responsible for all aspects of
security here in Uruzgan."
The ceremony was attended
by Commander JTF 633 Maj-
Gen Michael Crane, ANA 4th
Bde Commander Gen Zafar and
Commander CTU Col Simon Stuart.
