CONNECTING with indigenous col-
leagues has been made easier with
the development of the online Army
Regional Indigenous Network, or
Army RIN, on the Defence Alumni
The Army RIN builds on the success
of the Defence Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander Network (DATSIN) by
providing an informal and accessible
forum for indigenous Army members to
contact, mentor and support each other.
Army Indigenous Strategy Officer
Maj Del Madge said the Army RIN
had grown from an email distribution
list of indigenous members who have
attended a DATSIN conference, helped
out at a recruiting event, participated
in an indigenous sporting carnival, or
just expressed interest in supporting the
Army Indigenous Strategy.
"We were looking for ways to max-
imise participation and to encourage
communication regionally rather than
just push out news from Canberra," Maj
"When we came across the Defence
Alumni Network (DAN), we felt it
would be perfect to trial an online
The DAN is a secure social network-
ing site for current and former ADF
Army RIN moderator Maj Lea Dunn,
said the DAN aimed to facilitate infor-
mal regionally based networking and
"It's a tool to help indigenous sol-
diers connect, communicate and build
strength in Army's indigenous commu-
nity," Maj Dunn said.
"I hope it will also provide a forum
for consultation with indigenous mem-
bers across Army and enable them to
access information on regional activities
Cpl Anne Dufficy, a founding mem-
ber of the Army Indigenous Strategy
Steering Committee and Army RIN
member, said the Army RIN had the
potential to grow.
"This is a great method to connect
and communicate with other soldiers,"
Cpl Dufficy said.
"The DAN can be used to connect
with sporting groups and friends without
using social media such as Facebook.
"I think the Army RIN is great way to
link up with other indigenous soldiers in
new posting locations."
New Army RIN member Pte Daniel
"I use the RIN regularly to catch up
with family and mates within Army," Pte
"It's a handy tool for keeping me up
to date with sporting events, conferences
and news from all around the country."
