Great ideas shine at expo
THREE innovative designs
impressed judges in the final of this
year's Diggerworks Good Idea Expo
The three winning participants
from the Townsville, Darwin and
Brisbane regional expos present-
ed their ideas to a panel of judges,
led by Head of Modernisation and
Strategic Planning -- Army Maj-
Gen Jeff Sengelman in the final on
Cpl Sean Armstrong, of 6RAR,
took out the top prize for the
"Mootchie" -- an integrated hootchie
and mozzie net that provides a simple,
quick-to-erect combined shelter and
insect protection system for soldiers.
Second place went to Sgt
Christopher Flynn, of 4 Regt RAA,
with the "Spillinator" -- a design that
allows a deployable barbecue to be
configured as a multipurpose and
flexible cooking system.
Cfn Timothy Filmer, of 8/12 Regt,
took third prize with the "Filmer
Bracket" -- designed to allow a single
operator to rapidly deploy a Clark
Mast on the front of a Bushmaster.
Joining Maj-Gen Sengelman
on the panel were Nick Beagley, a
research leader with the Human
Protection and Performance Division
of DSTO, Diggerworks Director Col
Jason Blain and Greg Foreman, of the
Land Engineering Agency.
Each entry was judged on effec-
tiveness, usefulness and suitability

had gone to in developing their ideas
and how well they presented to the

the introduction into service of your
ideas," he said.

There were 33 entries from across
the three regions, with participants
representing a wide range of roles and
A number of entries have been
sent to relevant program offices with-
in DMO and Defence for considera-
tion for further development.
