The awards honour and cele-
brate outstanding achievements in
security by Defence and Defence
industry security specialists, lead-
ers, teams and individuals.
Chief Security Officer Frank
Colley said there were many people
who had made a major contribution
to improving security in Defence.
"The awards are a great oppor-
tunity for those people to be recog-
nised," Mr Colley said.
Finalists will be invited to
an official awards ceremony in
Canberra in March 2013.
The Defence Secretary, CDF
and Deputy Secretary Intelligence
and Security will be invited to
announce the winners and present
Interstate finalists will have
their travel and accommodation

Surprise win for Nunes

CPL Elio Nunes is the 2012 recipi-
ent of 5RAR's Warr-Khan Trophy,
awarded annually to the most
outstanding junior leader in the
Brig Colin Khan (retd), who
commanded 5RAR's second tour in
Vietnam, and the 5RAR Association
president, Col Roger Wainwright (retd)
presented the trophy.
Cpl Nunes, a former Portuguese
Marine who joined the Australian Army
in 2008 after immigrating to Australia,
said he didn't know he had won the
award until just before the event.
"I had no idea this was happening,"
Cpl Nunes said.
"I was heading to Darwin airport
on my way to Adelaide to take part in
a mission rehearsal exercise in Cultana
when we got a call to come back to the

when he was told who would pick him
up from the airport.
"When I heard the RSM was pick-
ing me up I thought I was in serious

a very proud moment for him, but
remained humble, thanking those
around him for the honour.
"I have to thank the battalion and
the diggers because without them it
wouldn't be possible," Cpl Nunes said.
Brig Khan said it was great to see
so many young soldiers gathered in the
one place and praising Cpl Nunes.
"When I present this award it
reminds me of the great observation
that all wars and battles are won by
good private soldiers who are led by
good NCOs and senior NCOs," Brig
"Cpl Nunes exemplifies the good
NCO -- he is an excellent role model for
all ranks in the battalion."
