Comfortable but pricey choice
IT’S big but can be hustled along
through traffic and on the open road
with surprising ease for a vehicle
weighing more than two tonnes.
The Lexus RX350 F-Sport could
easily be seen as the luxury variant
of the Toyota Kluger, with a different
interior and an aggressively remodelled
front and rear exterior.
But after spending some time in the
leather driver’s seat of the F-Sport, one
can clearly see a Kluger it ain’t.
The price of more than $90,000 is
one big difference, but the cavernous
interior for both people and their lug-
gage and the similar engine specs are a
reminder that both cars have the same
manufacturer behind them.
What you do notice about the
F-Sport is how well everything has been
put together and the quality of materials
used on the soft-touch dash, the leather
on the seats, the carpet on the floor and
the finish of the exterior paint.
Sitting behind the wheel feels like
sitting on the seat and not in the seat,
which could be a problem in twisty sec-
tions of road if the suspension and ride
was not as good as it is.
Drivers will be able to punt this
two-tonne beast through heavy traffic,
finding gaps they’d only think of try-
ing to fit into with a mid-sized sedan
and receiving only minor body roll
from minimal steering input. This kind
of progress is afforded by a punchy,
responsive and refined engine that pro-
duces just the right amount of accelera-
The all-wheel drive instilled a sur-
prising amount of confidence too, allow-
ing confident handling around wet city
Cruising on the highway is a refined,
comfortable and quiet experience with
little wind or road noise entering the
Tech-wise the F-Sport comes stacked
with gadgets including dynamic radar
cruise control, which senses slower cars
ahead and automatically slows the car
down when it reaches a set distance
behind the vehicle ahead, parking assist
sensors with a rear view camera, an in-
dash colour screen which allows con-
trol of satellite navigation through an
intuitive three-button user interface, the
excellent Bluetooth phone system, cli-
mate control and a unique entertainment
system with a crisp-sounding digital
The F-Sport might not be in every
family’s price bracket, costing more
than $30,000 over the top-of-the-range
Toyota Kluger Grande.
It might to be hard for some to
justify the purchase price, but for the
money you get a well-built, quality
motor vehicle, which is safe, powerful,
comfortable and would be a long-term
ownership prospect for any family after
a prestige badge.

Luxury option: The Lexus RX350 F-Sport offers much more than the Toyota Kluger with which it shares a
platform, but whether it’s enough to justify the price tag depends on how much buyers value the prestige badge.
