THERE'S an old saying that you
don't know what you don't know,
which is behind a move by the ADF
to get to know the life and work
skills of its reservists.
Take WO1 Neil Christie for exam-
ple. He's spent most of his life look-
ing after water quality for the peo-
ple of Melbourne and right now he's
doing something quite similar in East
WO1 Christie is on deployment
with the International Stabilisation
Force and his primary job is to coor-
dinate engineering maintenance,
including potable water supply and
waste management, as part of the
ISF's Service Delivery Cell.
His normal reservist role in
Victoria is as a works manager with
22 Const Sqn.
It's clear that his civilian qualifi-
cations and his experience as capi-
tal works electrical supervisor with
Transfield Services have come to
good use in his reserve role.
"That's why I am a big supporter
of the Civil Skills Data survey," WO1
"It will improve the ADF's capa-
bility of matching the civilian skills
of reservists with specialist work that
needs to be done in uniform.
"My civilian job takes me through-
out the Melbourne metro area and to
all major catchments in Victoria.
"I am able to bring this type of
project management experience to
my Defence job. But if I didn't tell
them, they wouldn't have necessarily
WO1 Christie said all reservists
should take advantage of completing
the online skills survey.
"It's a good idea if reservists want
to increase their chances of inter-
esting work in Defence as well as
demonstrating they may already have
advanced skills," he said.
Having full visibility of the civil-
ian qualifications, skills and experi-
ence available within the ADF work-
force will enable Defence to more
readily identify individuals with par-
ticular skills needed in peacetime or
for operational deployment, especial-
ly during Defence emergencies.
To register for the Civil Skills Data e-survey,
reservists can go to www.civilskillsdata.com.
The e-survey closes in June and those who
complete it will be paid a half-day's pay for
doing so. For more information and help
