IN HIS third year of ADFA Capt
Andrew George bought a horse,
named it Harlequin and stabled it near
It didn't seem to strange for then-
OCdt George, who grew up riding horses
with his mother and had a great-grand-
father who served with the Light Horse
But his father was dismayed by the
purchase of a horse Capt George named
after Harry "Breaker" Morant's stallion.
"I owned a horse before I owned a
car," Capt George said. "Which frustrated
the hell out of my dad."
After serving in infantry battalions
and finishing an acting degree, Capt
George, of 2 Div, has landed the lead
role in a revised production of the play
that formed the basis for the 1980 movie
Capt George also dreamed up the idea
of re-doing the production after 35 years
and ended asking a lot of director Gareth
"It's always difficult when you're
pitching at a director and saying 'I want
to play the lead role as well'," Capt
"But if we were doing a reading of
the script and I couldn't cut it, I would
have been axed on the spot."
Capt George will feature alongside
film-star Mark Lee, famous for his role
in the movie Gallipoli, who will play
Morant's defending officer, Maj James
Thomas, during a production at the
Seymour Centre in Sydney from April
"Sometimes I have to do a double
take," Capt George said. "I keep seeing
Archie Thompson from Gallipoli."
"I keep wanting to ask him 'what are
Col Richard Mallet, of Forcomd, and
Maj Bob Stanton, of 8 Sig Regt, both
lateral transfers from the British Army,
were well suited to the roles they were
given in the production, according to
"We have actual British officers actu-
ally playing British officers," he said.
"Most guys in the Army have got that
presence about them. I thought, just cut
to the chase and get the real McCoy in
The remaining cast features a host of
professional actors, some graduates of
the National Institute of Dramatic Art,
who have had roles in TV shows such as
Capt George said having serving
officers in the cast helped the profes-
sional actors to get in character.
"The actors look for inspiration,
someone to model themselves off," he
"They're senior actors and they would
stare down most directors if they disa-
greed about how to deliver a line. But if
Maj Stanton or Col Mallet tell them, they
say 'yeah okay'."
