DEMOLISHING an armoury in the
name of security earned WO2 Peter
Henrichs the outstanding perfor-
mance by a security specialist award
in the Defence Excellence in Security
Awards held at the Australian War
Memorial on March 27.
Implementing a solution to defi-
ciencies discovered in local armouries,
WO2 Henrichs, of 31 Security Section,
worked on retro-fitting them to meet
current security requirements, saving
Defence a lot of money.
WO2 Henrichs said it was an honour
to receive the award but it was a reflec-
tion on what the team set out to achieve.
"I wasn't expecting anything like
this -- there was a problem and we fixed
it," he said.
"Security can be a difficult job and
it's not that well recognised.
"This ceremony is one of those
means to recognise the importance of
what people do in Defence security."
The awards featured four categories
focusing on security specialists, lead-
ers, teams and individuals to recognise
excellence and outstanding performance
Maj Keith Lawton, of 3RAR, was a
finalist in the outstanding contribution
to security by an individual category for
his efforts while posted to HQ 5 Bde
as a key contributor to projects result-

attitude and awareness of personnel at
Maj Lawton said making the finals
came off the backs of other people
within the organisation.
"I've been part of the process but
a lot of people have been involved
and a lot of good work done to get
Holsworthy to the point it is today," he
"It was very flattering to be nomi-
nated and be a finalist."
Deputy Secretary Intelligence and
Security Steve Meekin said by acknowl-
edging the efforts of the finalists and
winners, security awareness within
Defence would strengthen.
"Security can be a tough job -- it's
hard work and needs constant atten-
tion," he said.
"These awards celebrate achieve-
ments in security and will play an inte-
gral role in embedding security as a
natural part of everyday work."
With more than 50 nominations
across the categories, the awards high-
lighted efforts and achievements in
security from members across Defence

Mr Meekin said while only a small
amount of security professionals were
recognised in the awards, there were
many in Defence who were doing out-
standing work every day.
"It's important to acknowledge the
efforts of all people doing great work in
security," he said.
