REACHING the peak of his
desired British Army career
in 2009, Cpl Jason Holt, of
1CSR, decided the best option
for himself and his family was a trans-
fer to the Australian Army.
His British Army commitments meant
the process took longer than expected,
but in January 2011 Cpl Holt donned
the iconic slouch hat and started his new
career and lifestyle.
Joining the British Army in 1996, Cpl
Holt completed trade school as a signal-
ler and was posted to Germany, where he
spent the next 10 years.
"It was there I met and married
Stefanie, who by coincidence had a
British father who was a Royal Signaller
as well," he said.
"I served in different units and
appointments and was promoted to corpo-
ral by the time I returned to the UK where
I served with the Pirbright Army Training
Centre and Harrogate Army Foundation
College as a platoon sergeant.
"One highlight of my career was play-
ing rugby for the British Army."
Cpl Holt deployed to Kosovo on
Operation Agricola in 1999 with the UK's
7 Sig Regt as a detachment commander.
His unit crossed the border as soon as the
Special Forces had cleared the way.
Cpl Holt said his unit spent most of
the six months with the French forces
providing communication links and he
was fortunate to see the signing of the
agreement for the demilitarisation of the
Kosovo Liberation Army by force com-
mander Gen Mike Jackson.
"Being deployed on operations
was another highlight of my career -- it
allowed me to do my trade properly in a
hostile environment," he said.
In 2003, Cpl Holt deployed on
Operation Iraqi Freedom with 16 Sig
"The insurgents started becoming a
greater threat towards the end of 2003 so
it was the tours afterwards that got a hell
of a lot worse," he said.
"I was posted to a communications
centre for my second tour with 20 Armd
Bde in 2006, so I missed out on a lot that
was going on, except for a few indirect
fire incidents on the base."
Posted to Robertson Barracks near
Darwin with Stefanie and their two chil-
dren, Dylan and Bailey, Cpl Holt said
a real eye-opener was when he was on
Exercise Talisman Sabre 2011.
"For the five days of driving from
the Northern Territory to get to the
Shoalwater Bay Training Area we could
have driven the length of England five
times," he said.
"Everyone knows Darwin for its hot,
tropical weather, but whenever we went
on holidays it always seemed to be some-
where with a hot climate, so we have
coped with it well, though air condition-
ing is also a fantastic thing."
Signalling a change
Promises of life in the tropics and new career
directions were too good for a former British Army
signaller to pass up, Cpl Mark Doran reports.
