TOURS of battlefields in France and
walking the Kokoda Track in Papua
New Guinea will be some of the expe-
riences shared by the recipients of
the CA's "I'm an Australian Soldier"
Six soldiers were presented the
scholarships and book prizes by CA
Lt-Gen David Morrison in Canberra on
March 2, after being selected from a
large field in the highly competitive ini-

The scholarship is designed to pro-
mote the study of military history and
at the same time recognise and reward
soldiers who achieve in the core areas of
the "I'm an Australian Soldier" initiative.
Lt-Gen Morrison said the history of
the Australian Army was written on the
back of, and rests on the shoulders of,

Highlights of their tour will include
the Anzac Day dawn service at Villers
Bretonneux and the evening service at
the Menin Gate at Ypres.
Cpl Walters said it was overwhelming
to be selected for the scholarship because
so many soldiers applied and only a few
"We are going to be touring the
Western Front and will be researching
the battles fought there. We will then give
presentations on those battles and a per-
son of interest," Cpl Walters said.
"It will not be just educational for me
as the experience will be something I can
bring back and share with others.
"I think it will also be an emotional
journey as I will see where the Anzacs
grew up and taking that pride away with
me will be amazing."
The Kokoda group will include
Cpl Daniel Crosbie, of MUR, Cpl
Robert Nelson, of 5 Avn Regt, and Cpl
Muhammed Rifat, of 3CSR, who will
commemorate the 70th anniversary of the
Papua New Guinea campaign in World
They will depart on April 20 to walk
the Kokoda Track and plan to meet
Lt-Gen Morrison for the Anzac Day ser-
vice at the Isurava Village Memorial.
Cpl Crosbie said he was a bit surprised
to be selected for the scholarship and to
walk the Kokoda Track, but it was defi-
nitely an honour and something he would
