SOTG members have been busy throughout
Christmas and the New Year, partnering with
Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) in a series
of targeted operations to uncover IED components,
weapons caches and drugs.
In a December 30 operation in Zabul province, a
combined team of SOTG and ANSF personnel seized
and destroyed 3.75 tonnes of ammonium nitrate,
enough to make about 286 IEDs.

The find came after a series of raids throughout
December uncovered weapons caches in Zabul and
IED materials, RPG warheads and a 107mm rocket
were among items found in the caches.
The Zabul province cache was uncovered after a
series of firefights in which several insurgents were

"The force elements were able to clear the area,
discovering the cache of RPGs without encountering
insurgents during the mission," he said.
"Every insurgent weapon or IED material cache
seized and destroyed by ANSF and SOTG soldiers
mean the weapons cannot be used against the ANSF,
Afghan civilians or coalition forces."
Targeting insurgent financing, a January 8 operation
involving SOTG, ANSF and US Drug Enforcement
Agency personnel found and destroyed a major drug
manufacturing operation in Helmand province.
The force uncovered 110kg of heroin, 90kg of
opium and large quantities of precursor chemicals with
an estimated street value of more than $7 million.
Lt-Col J said several personal weapons were also
uncovered during the mission.
"The destruction of drugs and equipment will affect
the insurgency's ability to operate effectively for some
time to come," he said.
