A CONTINGENT of personnel from
Australia's Federation Guard joined
their Italian counterparts for Italy's
Republic Day parade through the
centre of Rome on June 2.
The Australians formed a flag party
in the parade, which commemorates
the referendum in which the Italian
people decided on a new form of gov-
ernment following World War II.
More than 80 foreign delegates,
including Governor-General Quentin
Bryce attended the parade, which was
presided over by Italian President
Federation Guard SM WO2
Mick Dewar marched as part of the
Australian flag party.
"We had an Army lieutenant carry-
ing the Australian flag with an escort
provided by a petty officer from the
Navy, a sergeant from the Air Force
and I represented the Army," he said.
"We were one of many inter-
national delegations carrying their
national flags through the parade
and we marched through the centre
of Rome past the Colosseum, along
the Fori Imperiali, past the Tomb of

WO2 Dewar said it was an honour
to represent Australia during such an
important event in Italy.
