COMBAT health employment
categories (ECs) for other ranks
are about to undergo significant
Medical and dental corps ECs
were given approval by the Army
Personnel Committee late last
year to restructure in response to
Army's changing needs.
Six ECs will be affected
including technician laboratory,
preventative medicine, technician
operating theatre, medical opera-
tor, dental assistant and technician
Chief of Staff ALTC Lt-Col
Greg Kohlmeyer said four trades
would be phased out as part of the
"ECN 406 Technician
Laboratory will be terminated and
replaced with a scientific officer
(SO) capability," he said.
"They can either corps transfer
to an alternate EC or can apply to
become an SO. All members have
to transition by January 30, 2014."
ECN 404 Technician Dental
will be terminated this year
and ECN 029-3 Senior Dental
Assistant -- Preventative will be
terminated as a specialist stream
within the Dental Assistant EC.
"The Dental Assistant EC will
form the future capability for
other ranks' dental service trades,"
Lt-Col Kohlmeyer said.
"All technician dental person-
nel will be automatically transi-
tioned to the Dental Assistant EC
unless they elect to transfer to
A senior dental assistant -- pre-
ventative will transition back as
either a dental assistant or den-
tal supervisor, unless electing to
transfer to an alternate EC.
Technician dental and senior
dental assistant -- preventative per-
sonnel affected by the restructure
have been granted a three-year
salary non-reduction provision
until January 30, 2014, applicable
if they choose to remain in the
Dental Assistant EC. Personnel
electing to transfer to alternate
ECs will be subject to normal
ECN 408 Technician Operating
Theatre will be integrated into the
ECN 031 Medical Operator EC
as an additional specialist stream
"The capability provided by
technician operating theatre per-
sonnel will remain the same with-
in the Medical Operator EC, but
they may be required to complete
additional training in line with the
medical operator training continu-
um," Lt-Col Fleming said.
The ECN 322 Preventative
Medicine EC changes include the
implementation of modularised
training for ARes soldiers and the
introduction of a subject four cor-
