FINALLY Subaru has
answered the call
from Australia for a
cle by releasing the Outback
wagon in November.
Powered by a 110kW
common rail, direct injected,
2.0-litre diesel, turbo-charged,
boxer engine, drivers can
exploit all of this power from
3600rpm and the total amount
of the handy 350Nm of torque
I drove the spacious wagon
130km on smooth asphalt and
rough dirt roads.
It's ideal family-sized trans-
port with competent handling
and comfortable ride charac-
teristics. On occasions the sus-
pension felt too firm over cor-
rugated dirt roads, but I guess a
car is like a cake and it's better
to be firm than sloppy.
Only available in a six-
speed manual, coupled with an
easy to use clutch, gear chang-
es are a non-fuss affair.
On the short test I managed
a combined fuel figure of 6.4
litres per 100km, driving most-
ly in 80 and 100 km/h zones.
The interior is simple and
modern looking. Dual-zone
climate control manages pas-
senger comfort levels, a six-
speaker and six-disc, MP3
compatible stereo looks after
passenger aural pleasure and
supportive front seats bolster
the driver through tight and
rough country roads.
Exterior styling is the same
as the other non-diesel Outback
models, except for the turbo
bonnet scoop. The Outback
diesel is a practical safe, fam-
ily sized wagon with excellent
fuel efficiency, making it great
AWD diesel transport.
Diesel delight: The Outback is capable on and off road.
