ADF personnel took
part in a service at the
Sandakan Memorial Park
in Malaysia on August 15
to remember the victims
of Japanese brutality dur-
ing World War II.
The park is the site
of the POW camp where
more than 2000 Allied
servicemen were interned
by Japanese forces.
The service remem-
bered those who perished
in the death marches from
Sandakan to Ranau, those
who died in the camp, and
locals who suffered and
died in the occupation.
Williams and Defence
Attache Col Steve Tully
attended the ceremony
along with embassy staff.
The service was well
attended and many had
travelled from Australia to
be present. Ms Williams
said the close relationship
between Australia and
Malaysia derived from the
shared wartime struggles
of both countries.
